How Radiant!  Health Benefits of LED Lighting in the Car Dealership

We know that lighting plays an important role in your business.  It can set the perfect mood for the showroom, eliminate dangers on the lot, extinguish service area shadows and hazards, and influence employee work behind the scenes.  While most dealers primarily focus on the massive amounts of money they save on utility and maintenance costs when they switch over to an IoT-enabled SMART space, we shouldn’t ignore the many health benefits that emanate from having a smart LED lighting solution in the car dealership.  Here are a just a few of them.

LED is Almost Natural

It’s common knowledge that the healthiest light for our bodies is good ol’ natural sunlight.  It’s why we generally tend to be in the best moods and are most alert and productive when the sun is shining.  But what happens if there are no windows around, or the sky is gray or rainy, or it’s 9 p.m. on the night shift?

That’s where LED lighting comes in as the closest replica of natural lightWithout getting too technical, our bodies respond best to high color temperatures. (Color temperature, measured in kelvin, is how light appears when the human eye looks directly at the source.).  Natural sunlight has a color temperature of 5000-7000 kelvin, and with smart LED lighting, we can reach those exact color temperatures.

Eyes on the Prize with IoT-enabled Technologies

With only approximately 20% of car dealerships nationwide operating with all-LED systems, it’s not a stretch to say that the remaining 80% suffer from some form of dim lighting somewhere in the organization.  This is an issue because it marks the beginning of a causal chain that ends in wasted resources.  Subpar lighting causes glare, which leads to eyestrain…and headaches…needing to take frequent breaks… work-related mistakes and errors…and unproductivity.  If you were to improve the lighting and migrate over to an IoT-enabled infrastructure, you would be addressing these problems at their source and eliminating these adverse symptoms.

LEDs Promote Natural Body Rhythm Patterns

It’s also common knowledge that our bodies have a 24-hour clock (known as the circadian clock).  When there is brighter light during the waking hours, it helps keep people’s circadian rhythms on “beat,” if you will.  With the correct amount (and temperature) of light corresponding with the appropriate time of day, people will be active and alert when it’s time to be active and alert.

LEDs Promote Environmental Health, Too

Because LEDs use less energy than fluorescents, high-intensity discharges (HIDs), and incandescent lighting, their carbon footprint is very small.  Additionally, they aren’t made of glass and they don’t contain any mercury.  Not only does this mean that LEDs pose a negligible safety threat for your employees, but they are also safe for the environment because they are 100% recyclable.  (Fluorescents and other light sources end up in landfills and contain hazardous materials.)

LEDs:  A Smart Choice for Dealership Health

Without question, the health benefits that are associated with LED lighting are impressive.  When you add those to the cornucopia of other advantages that LED lighting offers (i.e. reduced utility costs, reduced maintenance costs, increased workplace safety, etc.), you can see that moving to LED lighting is, indeed, a smart choice for your dealership.
