SBT developed a low-cost outdoor lighting system, increasing light levels from two foot-candles (fc), yes 2-foot candles, to 20 fc. Rather than 575-watt fixture heads, which wasted energy from all the heat they produced, SBT installed highly efficient 145-watt LED heads to increase energy efficiency and reduce costs.
As the industry’s leading provider of wireless building control system provisioning, configuration, maintenance, and application development services, SBT Alliance tackled these logistical challenges head-on through our Glued Solutions (GSI) division. Pulling on our years of experience in deploying hundreds-of-millions of square-feet of wirelessly networked IoT-enabled smart spaces, Glued Solutions established a systematic deployment process covering everything from design review to final configuration and ongoing support.
SBT Alliance worked with the client’s preferred fixture manufacturer, Hubbell, to install Peloton high bay LED lighting fixtures throughout the warehousing, light manufacturing, and maintenance garage. SBT also devised an advanced controls solution with IoT Controls Ecosystem partner Avi-On. Avi-On’s Bluetooth® Mesh lighting controls solution was perfect for PPL Electric as it offered custom zoning, scheduling, occupancy detection, and auto-light adjustment depending on the time of day. Daylight harvesting especially contributed to energy savings, taking advantage of natural light around the facility. To streamline the process of integrating the IoT-enabled controls into the Hubbell fixtures, SBT Alliance deployed its internal factory, Integrated Advanced Controls, to fixture-embed the Avi-On devices into each light and pre-commission the fixtures before arriving on site.
SBT Alliance worked with its innovative internal division, IAC, to integrate Bluetooth mesh controls directly into cutting edge DDL fixtures to further enhance the operability of the warehouse and office facilities. This IoT solution includes occupancy-based controls, which allowed for value engineering throughout the facility. It helped limit unnecessary installations which resulted in a significant reduction in installation costs. Having networked controls also enabled the client to operate all lights within the facility from a single “master” switch, allowing them to bring all lights to full bright in case of an emergency.
Creative project engineering was required to achieve and exceed the city’s requirements. SBT Alliance partnered with its industry partner, consulting firm TRC Solutions, to work the full lighting project into the grant budget awarded by the California Energy Commission, thanks to a very cost-effective design.
Through the collaborative effort that was only possible between Integrated Advanced Controls and Avi-on we were able to establish a multi-functional team that developed first article procedures and shipping logistics that saved a great deal of time and money during the installation and final on-site commissioning.
After studying the audits’ findings, SBT’s advanced lighting system experts created a custom project scope for each of the five parks. This custom scope included interior office fixture retrofits, building exterior fixture replacements, sport light fixture replacements within the fields, and the relamping of fixtures where applicable. The addition of occupancy sensors, parking lot fixture replacements, and, most importantly, system connectivity through a networked controls solution rounded out the project scope.
By leveraging the facility’s lighting as the backbone for the IoT controls, SBT Alliance engineers were able to provide Rich’s Foods with a digital infrastructure that provides real-time, granular usage data of their energy systems. Moreover, this new digital backbone provides Rich’s Foods with the foundation to further extend data-gathering and system optimization to drive further savings and facility insights.
