Safety First:  Protecting Your Car Dealership With IoT

As a car dealer, you are part of a busy lot.  (Yes, that pun was intended.  You’re welcome.)  Dealers like you devote much of your time to the “micro” level details within your organization, and sometimes, everyone might forget about your “big picture” role as a guardian of employee safety and security.

Car DealersNOT Just Looking Out for #1

That’s right:  When viewed through a wider lens, we find that auto dealers seek to preserve their own assets and those that are important to others, too.  Think about it:  When a salesperson goes to work on the showroom floor, loved ones are entrusting that individual’s health and well-being to the environment you have created. It’s the same with the mechanic in the service area—or the customer who stops by to test out a new vehicle.  In a very real sense, you protect the most important entity out there:  people.

Better Lighting, Fewer Incidents

As such, safety and security should be at the forefront of your mind.  After all, millions of people are hurt in the workplace every year, with an average injury rate of one person every seven seconds. These work-related incidents often end up costing employers time, energy, and money.  Many of those accidents—data suggest that perhaps up to 50%–could be avoided with better lighting.  Naturally, that begs the question, “How might upgrading to LED lighting better protect the car dealership?

Shine those Floors

Slipping, tripping, and falling account for about 25% of workplace accidents.  Poorly lit showrooms with an abundance of shadows can mask hazards on the ground.  That principle also applies to stairwells, hallways, and back offices.  Additionally, service areas can be home to all sorts of floor threats, from liquids like transmission fluids and oils to solids like tools and cords.  A dark and dingy shop makes it harder for workers to spot these perils before it’s too late.  LED lighting can better illuminate those areas and help employees stay on their feet.

Prevent “Crimes of Opportunity” on the Lot

With inventory sitting out in the open day and night, it’s no surprise that dealerships struggle with both car part and entire vehicle vandalism and theft.  Lots that use traditional lighting are generally marred by shadows and darkness, which can provide criminals with the cover they need to damage or steal your property.

While the loss of inanimate objects like cars would certainly be a disappointment, bodily harm to a living, breathing person would be an utter catastrophe.  The truth is that the world is not a safe place, and a dark, shadowy, outdoor environment poses an immense threat to employees on the lot.  LED lighting would eliminate those shadows and provide everyone with a heightened sense of comfort and safety

Stay More Alert and Focused

Many accidents also occur when people simply aren’t paying attention because they’re tired or unfocused.  That problem is compounded by poor lighting, which can drain one’s energy, cause headaches, hurt the eyes, and much more.  LED lighting is softer, healthier, and can be tailored specifically to employee needs, which will keep workers more attentive.

LED LightingThe Smart and Safe Choice

Upgrading to LED lighting will make your dealership a safer, more comfortable place.  As a true steward of people’s lives, you can never be too safe.  That’s why LED is not just a “smart” choice, but a wise one, too.
